The number of people in America who lack health insurance rose to 47 million between 2000 and 2006, while children and workers of all income levels are losing coverage, reports a report of the Economic Policy Institute.
The increase of almost 8.7 million people without health care was “led primarily by the continued erosion of health coverage provided by the companies,” the report says.
In 2006, 2.3 million fewer people receiving health coverage from their companies with respect to 2000, specifies the document which stressed that the decrease does not take into account population growth.
Nearly 60% of the nation’s children have the health coverage provided by the company of their parents, but in 2000-2006 the number of children with this service was reduced by 3.4 million.
“The public health insurance and does not compensate for these losses,” the text of the independent panel.
Sixth year of decline
This was the sixth consecutive year of decline in health coverage provided by employers in the United States.
Native Americans had the highest rates of health coverage provided by the companies and reached almost 74%, although the figure implies a fall of 3.5 percentage points.
Among people born in other countries, the rate was 54% in 2006, which means a reduction of 4.4 percentage points from 2000.
Best white
Whites are the ones who had the highest coverage rate, with 76.4%, although there was a decrease of 3.3 percentage points over the six years analyzed.
For their part, black people had a general rate of 66%, 2.6 percentage points below the previous record, and only 48.4% Hispanic, 5 points less than in 2000 .
